Phoenix area residents are cleaning up after a severe thunderstormtoppled power lines, felled trees and ripped mobile homes off theirfoundations. The storm suddenly emerged Wednesday evening from two collidingfronts: one in the south heading north and one in the east headingnortheast, said Doug Green of the National Weather Service inPhoenix. Several mobile homes near Germann and Ironwood roads in the San TanValley were knocked off their foundations, said Collin Williams, aspokesman for Rural/Metro Fire Department. Responders for Rural/Metro reported seeing a wall of dust comingfrom one direction and a wall of rain from the opposite. The stormscollided over the trailer park. In front of the thunderstorms were "gustnadoes," spinning windsresembling a large dust devil, according to the National WeatherService. The "gustnadoes" ripped roofing and siding off of homes and spreaddebris across yards and streets, Williams said.
The National Weather Service has not reported any officialtornadoes, but they have not ruled out the possibility. Forecastersare looking into the first hand reports, photos and videos todetermine whether any of the 'gustnadoes' were actually tornadoes. Burning debris at American Recycling Industries in west Phoenixwere fanned by the wind, pushing flames toward another nearbybuilding that stored cardboard, said Jorge Enriquez, a Phoenix FireDepartment spokesman. Firefighters also responded to blazes at two homes near the base ofCamelback Mountain, one near 44th Street and Camelback Road and theother near 56th Street and Camelback Road.
Enriquez could notconfirm whether those fires were caused by the storm. No injuries were reported as a result of the storm. Phoenix is expected to see clear skies and slight breezes throughthe rest of week, and temperatures are expected to reach tripledigits by the weekend.
