Why Recycle Think you are on the cutting edge of technology? Expect to replace your device sooner than you think. With all the competitors in the computer, tablet, and phone businesses, innovators are continually updating, upgrading, and coming out with new technology every day making your device obsolete at an even quicker rate. With all these old devices being outdated so quickly, protecting our environment becomes a critical issue. Pick the Recycler Not all recyclers are created equal. Some recycling providers sell computers to other countries to dangerously dismantle for parts, often harming underpaid workers through the use of harmful chemicals. In addition, many of the least valuable parts just get sent directly to local and international landfills. Before you recycle, ask the company to explain precisely how they recycle outdated devices. Before You Recycle Wipe your device clean. Just deleting the files won’t do, experienced computer programmers may still be able to find those files even though you can’t see them. The most effective way to erase all of your information is to overwrite your hard drive. This can be done by a trusted computer technician or you can use a program yourself. Some free programs that overwrite hard drives include Hard Disk Scrubber and Darick’s Boot and Nuke. Recycle for Use Before you scrap your computer for parts, assess whether the computer is still useful to someone else. Many non-profit or low budget organizations may be thrilled to have your “dinosaur”. Goodwill has a partnership with Dell called Dell Reconnect. They attempt to refurbish your computer so it can be sold. If your computer is not salvageable, you can be rest assured that Dell adheres to environmentally conscience recycling and your computer won’t end up in a random international landfill. Recycle for Parts If you are sure it is time to recycle, make sure the company you go with is an e-Stewards Ceritfied Recycler. You can check out which companies are certified by checking the stewards.org website. Two big sure bets are Dell who assures you of refurbishing your computer or recycling it in accordance by environmentally friendly standards and Apple who provides an incentive by giving you a gift card for any value left in your computer or safely recycling it.
