Callaway's new X Hot irons for Game Improvers

Recreation & Leisure

I am a true 12 handicap (not made up). So I'm just an average golfer and switched from the X20's and bought the 3-SW xHots and could not be happier. I like the forgiveness in these Callaway X Hot irons and are very long, yet workable.

The most immediate thing I noticed about the X Hot irons is that they feel heavy, in a really nice way. The clubheads are huge, providing the lower center of gravity and higher trajectory most of us are after, and with the very light standard shaft Callaway ships these with, you get a really excellent feel for the clubhead throughout your swing without making the club so heavy as to negatively impact your clubhead speed or swing plane.

I was worried a cast, game-improvement iron set like the best price golf clubs X Hot would limit my ability to impress my playing partners with shot-shaping magic. Suffice it to say the X Hot irons impressed, not only preserving my ability to shape shots in both directions but actually providing increased control over the amount of bend and trajectory I wanted to impart. The X Hots just have a seemingly mystical ability to make the ball do just what you want it to do.

The cavity back design has allowed Callaway's award winning R&D team to place the weight in the X Hot irons to precisely position the centre of gravity, and move the most compliant part of the face, i.e. the sweet spot, lower. Callaway's research found that more and more golfers are striking their irons shot lower on the face, and designed the X Hot iron to produce faster ball speeds from this area.

You may have heard of the Speed Frame Face Technology. Callaway have incorporated the technology, previously used in their drivers, to make the face of the X Hot irons stiffer, creating a more efficient energy transfer to the ball. The stiffer, faster face design means more distance and speed, even on off-centre strikes.

The medallion located on the back of the club has also been modified. The dual material design features Callaway's Feel Management Technology, designed to fine tune the sound of the shot, promoting a crisper, dynamic feel at higher speeds. They were also very forgiving and the generous offset hosel will help here. The flight was a little higher than the cheapest callaway razr x irons, but that is to be expected and will help those high handicappers get the ball up in the air.

The shaft is also a revised option with a lightweight 95 gram Project X steel shaft in stiff and regular instead of the uniflex shafts Callaway have used in the past. This is a good upgrade and the Universal gripe is a nice mid-size and has a very good tread pattern for lining up and grip.

Overall, the Callaway X Hot are an evolution to the previous model rather than a revolution. The extra oomph from the new face is noticeable and combined with the new shaft options.
