Mainly a science museum, the Oman Children's Museum is located in Shatti al Qurum. Housed inside 2 dome shaped buildings it has an annual visitor number of over 50,000. Unlike most museums where you have to keep your hands off things, this museum has a whole load of interactive scientific displays that are targeted at kids between the ages of 6 to 12. It offers a truly a great learning experience as children can acquire vast amounts of knowledge about Human Life, Physics and Observation. It has 45 exhibits, 2 demonstrations and spans across an area of 10,000 square feet so there is more than enough space for kids to move about and learn things at their own pace. In the interactive section you can trigger a lightning bolt and even experience a fake electric shock. Launching a hot air balloon is also possible and so is taking a picture of your own shadow. The whisper dish that allows participants to send a message is extremely popular. Optical illusions are another focus area of the museum. There is also a life size human body structure where the various body parts can be removed and their functions explained in detail. 'Eye Spy' is another display that is designed with the goal of explaining how your eyes and brain see things differently; this is brilliantly done through perception panels and illusions. The physics section has many displays that explain weight, pressure, speed, force and reaction time as well as a spinning disc that increases and decreases its speed based on you movement; this is used to elaborate angular momentum. Open Saturday to Wednesday from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm as well as on Thursday from 9.00am to 1.00pm, the museum makes learning an all-out fun experience.
