The third biggest island in Thailand Samui is only 247 square km and way smaller then Phuket and Ko Chang who beat it hands down in the size dept. Coming from Bangkok, a distance of some 800km, it can be reached in 60 minutes by plane and between ten and thirteen hours if travelling by train or bus, and ship. Around 1,000,000 holiday makers travel to the island each year by whichever route, ardent to uncover its lovely beaches and bright skies for themselves. Samui has come a good way from its back-packer days where the sole accommodation you might find was an easy wooden house on the beach. Booking accommodation these days you will find a good range of options from simply furnished but classy beach houses to five star top-end resorts, blend this with a pleasant mix of entertainment and calm beaches and you've got the perfect island getaway that has got a lot of attractions for visitors. One main road runs round the island's shore and will take only around a hour to finish. A lot of other smaller roads lead off from it and if you make a decision to go exploring you can simply escape from the traveler areas and discover the local way of living. The inside area of the island is craggy and the roads can be quite bad so take care if you do wish to explore. You can hire motorbikes for cheap rates, or a jeep or automobile for a day and cover the entire island in a short while. Koh Samui is found in the Gulf of Thailand and this is obvious when dining out at one of many diners. Fresh fish and seafood is generally offered at the numerous beachside diners whether or not they are local Thai run places or sizeable resorts, the various palms provide fresh coconut milk which is added to Thai local dishes, and as Thai folks like their food spicy you could have to ask them to desist from adding too many red hot chili peppers. Aside from eating and sunbathing there are a considerable number of other activities to keep you entertained in Samui. Golfing is favored by neighbors and holiday-makers - Santiburi Golfing Course is situated close to Maenam and Bang Por beaches and set in the private club of the same name, this 18-hole championship golfing course is set in a lush tropical setting with coconut trees and breathtaking perspectives of Maenam Beach and Koh Phangan. Royal Samui Golfing and Members Club is another 18-hole golfing and recreation facility, and there's a nine whole course at Bophut. Samui is among the top spots to go to learn how to dive, or if you're already a professional diver it has great dive sites to explore with a surplus of sea life. Koh Tao, the Angthong Sea Park and the famous Sail Rock are all in the neighborhood and countless PADI diving faculties can prepare courses and diving trips for newbies and experienced divers searching out pleasant colorful corals, colleges of exotic fish, reef sharks and the grand whale shark. Muay Thai is also a choice on Samui and there are one or two camps dotted round the island that may teach the fundamentals to nooks and train advanced wrestlers. The World Muay Thai Council in South Lamai and Thai Pinyo Boxing College in North Lamai are the best well known. Some Muay Thai camps offer accommodation for trainees but if you opt to stay in more handsome environment then check out Koh Samui hostels online for an intensive selection of lodgings.
