Chief Justice Renato Corona"s testimony next week in his ownimpeachment trial is his only chance to save himself fromconviction, the House prosecution team said on Thursday. Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara said the prosecution panel expectsCorona to explain why he failed to declare several properties andsums of money in his statements of assets, liabilities and networth (SALN). Defense: Corona to face all issues Lawyer Karen Jimeno, defense spokesperson, meanwhile said theircamp is confident that the chief magistrate can answer allquestions that will be directed toward him.

Prosecution"s strategy Deputy Speaker Lorenzo Tañada III, for his part, said theprosecution team is currently meeting to map out its strategy inits cross-examination of the chief justice. He added that the panel may ask as much as a hundred questions toCorona, which will focus mainly on properties and money that didnot appear in his SALN. "He needs to come out with a story why he did not declarethese assets. If he fails to explain these things, sa tingin ko mayproblema ang ating punong mahistrado," Tañada said in the same media briefing.
The prosecution spokesman said the panel is also anticipatingCorona"s possible explanations to his failure to declarecertain properties in his SALN. "There can be two ways. Puwede niyang sabihin na hindi siyasi Renato Corona or sasabihin niya na akin ang mga ito, pero maypaliwanag at hindi ganoon kalaki [ang bank accounts]," he said. Tañada, however, maintained that the prosecution team"will not be intimated" by the chief justice, althoughthe camp already earlier admitted that Corona will not be easy tocross-examine given his credentials as a lawyer.
"I think the prosecutor who will be handling thecross-examination will be motivated by the fact that he wants tobring out the truth," he said. Lead public prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. earlier said lead privateprosecutor Mario Bautista will be tasked to cross examine the chiefjustice. - VVP, GMA News.
