There are many reasons one should consider getting involved in such a cause. Communities who suffer from a lack of proper nutrition by failing to get the proper amount of minerals and vitamins that the human body needs to survive will experience devastating effects. Communities and people who are living with malnutrition as their reality can experience more premature deaths, severe disabilities that can prevent working and earning an income, an increase in blindness especially amongst young children, and more deaths during pregnancies and deliveries as a result of a lack of vitamins and minerals. These devastating side effects of a poor diet and lack of healthcare are often not the fault of the individual suffering from malnutrition. Rather, in many poor or developing countries, the proper minerals and vitamins are not available for those looking to enrich their day-to-day diets. Basepoint Capital’s David Shulman is dedicated to helping advise a non-profit called the S and P foundation that is having some good success with their program designs in Israel. The World Bank has found that in a report done in 1993, micronutrient programs proved to be amongst the most cost-effective of all health interventions looking to combat malnutrition. Most micronutrient programs cost less than 50 dollars per disability-adjusted-life-year gained. Addressing deficiencies of vitamin A, iodine, and iron comprehensively and sustainably costs less than 0.3 percent of gross domestic product. Basepoint Capital’s David Shulman considers that in order for there to be a change in nutrition around the world, policymakers must be motivated to take action against malnutrition. As the world continues to become increasingly more globalized, more people will recognize the need to advocate for such changes. By having policymakers willing to take a stand against malnutrition in developing countries, more people will avoid the effects of diet without proper intake of minerals and vitamins. As people like Basepoint Capital’s David Shulman and the board of advisors for the non-profit realize, there is a strong need to continue to focus time to helping others in need to reap healthier lifestyles with better healthcare.
