Rugs and carpets are pieces of art that originated from Central Asia and are now being used all over the world. While the large sized ones can be costly if handmade, there are ones at amazingly cheap retail prices too! Textiles are not limited to apparels and garments only, as many would think it to be. In fact, textiles are considered invaluable pieces of art although a lot of technology also goes into its making. Besides what we wear, textiles manifest their creativity and aesthetics in many other fields that are related closely to our daily lives, like the home furnishing textiles and floor coverings. While the home furnishing textiles include curtains, pillow covers, shams, wall hangings, bed sheets, sofa and furniture covers, kitchen wears and bathroom wares, the floor coverings spread over an interesting domain of rugs and carpets. The Large Rugs are particularly favorite in many households for their unique value as pieces of art. Their history dates back to the middle ages when the technology of weaving was still being developed. These rugs are pretty heavy and so, they required robust looms on which they could be made. A lot of research and development was made by the handloom weavers, especially in Central Asia, during that time to be able to make them. Thus, if you visit textile museums across the world, you will come across many of them kept as a piece of art of extremely high valuation. In those days, the Handmade Rugs took quite a bit of time to be prepared on handlooms. Thus, the price used to be exorbitant for the common men and the rugs and carpets could be found in royal houses only. Many of the royal families of Persia, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Mughal India have been using the rugs and carpets regularly. Only after industrial revolution came in the 18th century that they could become a common man’s item. The advent of power loom made their production faster and thus, reduced the cost. However, on the power looms, the intricacy was lost to a large extent. The traditional rugs made out of hand had a lot of intricate designs that were inspired by Islamic art of Central Asia mostly. In power looms, it was found difficult to achieve the delicacy in quality. As a result, there was a shift towards easier designs based on simple geometry. Today, in a rug store, you are liable to find both for your home. You can get simple geometric patterns that are colorful and attractive, and come in various sizes, but lower in cost. You can also come across the Handmade Rugs which would have intricate and detailed designs, but their sizes would not be as varied as the other rugs. Also, their cost would be much higher! Now the choice becomes yours. You have to see the room for which you want it. You have to decide the size that would suit that room. You have to decide whether you want it for people to wipe off their shoes as they come in or just for show, i.e., whether the functionality is important or the aesthetics. Then, you have to check your budget before you zero in on the Large Rugs that are simple and machine made or the ones that are costly but handmade.
