Saitama Prefecture halted water intake and supply at one of itsfiltration plants after formaldehyde exceeding permitted limits wasfound in tap water there, and Chiba stopped water intake at threeplants after detecting the substance. Gunma followed suit. Operations were suspended at the plants in the Chiba cities ofNoda, Nagareyama and Matsudo as of early Saturday afternoon. Watersupply was cut off in Noda, Nagareyama, Abiko and Kashiwa, ChibaPrefecture. According to Chiba Prefecture, water was cut off to more than340,000 households in five of its cities. The outage affected about 154,900 households in Kashiwa and about68,000 households in Nagareyama. In Noda, water was cut off to about 54,000 households, while some38,000 households were affected in Yachiyo. People formed long lines at water stations. The water at the five plants was taken from the Tone River, whichflows through the Kanto region to the Pacific, and one of itsbranches, the Edo River, prefectural officials said. They startedexamining the water quality of the Tone headwaters in Gunma to tryto identify the source of the contamination. Saitama officials said the upstream area of the Karasu River, alsoa Tone River branch, in Gunma Prefecture could be a potentialsource of the contamination, noting there are local industriesdealing with substances that generate formaldehyde. Formaldehyde can be generated by a combination of organicsubstances included in the runoff from chemical plants andchlorine. Vaporized formaldehyde can cause cancer and sick buildingsyndrome, but the prefectural governments said the amounts detectedare not enough to have a negative impact on health. Apart from the purification plants in the three Chiba cities, thewater intake and supply were temporarily halted at plants in thecity of Gyoda in Saitama and the town of Chiyoda in Gunma. Operations at these two plants resumed after the formaldehydelevels fell and stabilized below the national threshold as a resultof filtration or diluting the substance with water held in reserve, officials said. According to Saitama Prefecture, 0.096 to 0.168 mg of formaldehydeper liter was detected in tap water at two filtration plants, inGyoda and Kasukabe, between Thursday and Friday, while the city ofNoda said 0.135 mg per liter was found in water at its plant. GunmaPrefecture said the level of the substance at its plant was 0.098mg per liter of water. The figures exceed the 0.08 mg per liter allowed under the waterquality standards set by the central government.
