The creations that aquarium makers come up break all bounds of imagination. These features certainly draw a lot of attention, but do they actually make you want to go back for the food? Many restaurants think that this is the case and spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on out-of-this-world creations that may be just the most brilliant marketing ploy. The most common food venue where there may be aquariums is the Americanized Chinese restaurants where you almost always find goldfish, koi, and maybe the occasional algae eater. The real reason behind this pervasive tradition is unclear. Perhaps there is an Eastern belief that you need to have all elements of nature surrounding you in order to improve your digestion, or that a water feature just improves the Feng Shui of the place. Maybe the placement of these water features is just a status symbol or a rite of passage. Regardless, fish tanks have evolved, a lot. Just like television, you can have wall mounted tanks that feature an entire self-sustaining seawater aquaculture society. Some of these features may also serve utilitarian features and be in the form of a coffee table or dining table that supports your meals. High-end restaurants have even entire architectural columns that go from floor to ceiling that are also aquariums. Hidden from view is often a complex filtration system that can take up as much space as the actual water features themselves. No one really knows what happens in these, aside from there being a series of pipes, filters, and maybe carbon to clean up the toxic waste that water life generates. Some restaurants have made their principal feature the ability to eat while being surrounded by fish while customers eat fish. These venues install entire walls, floors, and tables where ocean life freely swims while visitors enjoy their meal being completely surrounded. These may prompt highly philosophical questions such as how does it feel to be watched by your dinner. Visitors have generally commented on the environment being fairly serene and the novelty inviting them back. In Las Vegas, there is the Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge, which features an aquarium system that has over 117,000 gallons of water. Interestingly, this place is known as a local favorite and does not actually draw tourists. One of their exhibits feature jellyfish with neon lights to highlight their transparent nature. Inside their main aquarium system is of course their namesake, a silver mermaid statute. The venue also employs marine biologists to monitor the stability of the sea life and also feeding. Food, entertainment, and education can be combined in one package when you mix restaurants with complex aquarium systems. It can make for a unique and enjoyable dining experience.
