After opening in Paris in December, 1946, the fashion house launched their first show in 1947, featuring a spring and summer collection for that year. Historically, the lines were referred to as the "New Look" following the proclamation of Carmel Snow, then editor-in-chief of "Harper's Bazaar." The first line popularized a mid-calf length skirt and a large bust, which had been out of style since 1912, and a small waist. Despite post-war shortages and restrictions, Dior's line featured yards and yards of exuberant and luxurious fabrics. This New Look influenced fashion for many seasons to come and re-established Paris as the darling of the fashion world.
After Christian Dior's death in 1957, the fashion house was nearly shut down. Because so much of the French fashion industry relied on Dior, this was a serious crisis in the world of fashion. To prevent this, a young Yves Saint-Laurent, who had been recognized and hand-picked by Christian Dior prior to his death, was named as Artistic Director. Saint-Laurent left Dior in 1960, and the company flourished under the watch of designer Marc Bohan. During that time, Christian Dior cosmetics was born, and the men's line Christian Dior Homme was launched. The ready-to-wear fur collection was brought to life in 1973, and the first Christian Dior watch, called "Black Moon" was revealed in 1975.
In 1981, an investment group led by Bernard Arnault took over Dior, and a number of changes were made, primarily leaving behind the textile's operation and expanding couture. In 1982, the company purchased a large share of Mo * Louis Vuitton. Italian Gianfranco Ferr took leadership of the company in 1989, and the company continued to grow, launching more new products.
Designer John Galliano took over the leadership of Dior in 1997 and brought with him a great deal of controversy, with fashion shows featuring "homeless wear" and "S M style." Additionally, ads featuring "porn chic" turned heads and started a trend of risqu ads among competing fashion houses. Galliano left Dior in 2011, in the midst of more controversy.
