Clarity Enhanced Diamonds Clarity is one of the famous four c's (Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color) which determine a diamonds worth. Sometimes there are diamonds which have visible imperfections, either internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes on the stone's surface). With today's modern technology it is possible to obscure such imperfections, sometimes rendering them completely invisible to anyone except a professional gemologist. Clarity Enhancement Techniques There are two main techniques which enable enhancing a diamond's clarity. Laser drilling is where a high power, laser beam thinner than a human hair, is used to drill a channel into the diamond and all the way to the imperfection within. The laser itself may be enough to burn away the inclusion or a bleaching agent may be "poured" in. Fracture filling is where a glass like substance is injected into fractures. The inclusion is made invisable while the carat weight of the diamond remains unchanged. How to know if a Diamond has been Clarity Enhanced The whole idea of clarity enhancement is to turn impurities and defects invisible. When the clarity enhancement processes are carried out professionally they will leave no traces which can be detected by the average layman, or even amateur gemology enthusiasts. For a diamond which was evaluated by a high standard gemological laboratory, such as DGI located at the Israeli diamond exchange, all you will need to do in order to know if it has been clarity enhanced is to go over the evaluation report which is also available online. Where the stones clarity is addressed any clarity enhancement processes which were carried out will be listed. Advantages of Clarity Enhanced Diamonds If the other three c's are good (Carat, Cut and color) a clarity enhanced diamond may pose a chance to buy an impressive stone for an attractive price. What needs to be taken into account is that a clarity enhanced diamond is still considered by many jewelers to be "flawed" - this affects its worth. It is therefore extremely important to have clarity enhanced diamonds certified and appraised at a well respected gemological laboratory, such as DGIIsrael. Such certification and appraisal is the only way to verify if the price of a clarity enhanced diamond reflects its true characteristics. It is also essential to make certain the clarity enhancing procedures were carried out professionally so there is little chance of mishaps such as fillings becoming dislodged. Many of our customers at DGI have used our services for ensuring a certain clarity enhanced diamond is in fact the right stone for an engagement ring for their future fiancé. Once we supply them with comprehensive data (typical to our reports) they can compare it to what the seller promised and be reassured that all is as they expected it to be. We enjoy getting "thank you notes" from such customers who feel we enabled them to make the right choice and end up with a stone that's perfect for them.
