I remember going to the store once for an entertainment system. I wanted something that was really going to blow me away. Well, I spoke with a salesman and he started quoted all these specifications to me. He just didn't get it. I didn't want to hear about specifications. I wanted to know that the sound system was going to fill my house with music. This is a common mistake that many beginning copywriters make today. This article is hopefully going to drive home the point of benefit driven salescopy...once and for all. Features are fine. Certainly there are some products that we do want to know just what the deal is with them. For example, if I am going to buy a PC, I want to know that it has a large enough hard drive to store all my data and a fast enough processor to do the serious number crunching that I plan to do...not to mention the fact that it better have some serious RAM to run my massive programs like Camtasia and Photoshop. However, if you take a look at all those specifications, it's not the RAM we really care about or the speed of the processor or the size of the hard drive. What we ultimately care about is that this PC is going to allow us to do the job we need to do quickly and efficiently so that we are not wasting time and have more time to do things that we enjoy doing, like taking a walk with our dog. That is what we care about. THAT is the bottom line. So what is it with copywriters who focus so much on features and fail to explain to the prospect how their widget is going to make their life better? The problem is, quite simply, that they think these specifications are going to impress the prospect. The problem with THAT is that most prospects are so bombarded with features that they have become numb to them. In other words, they have stopped caring. Heck, every widget out there has these features. What is it that makes YOURS better? So when you are writing salescopy, you need to make sure that you are communicating to your prospect the actual benefits that he is going to get from your product. The copywriters who do this are the ones that end up selling the most products for their clients. Want more great copywriting tips that will turn you into a pro in no time flat?
