Whether you are talking about the act of communicating vertically within a company or actual vertical communications technology, you are talking about making communications better between employees, managers, and the people that they are supposed to serve. Business Communications History It used to be that employees would talk to each other and take orders from the manager. While this may work in a military situation, it is terrible for business, especially in today's economy where creativity means everything. In a battle, you need one person who sets the rules that people obey immediately and without question. However, to get the most out of your workforce, your employees need to be able to engage those at the top in conversations about how to make things better, faster, and less expensively. That means an open door policy where employees feel good about going not only to the manager but also to the manager's manager and to the CEO. The ability to have conversations from top to bottom in an organization is known as vertical communication. No longer are employees restricted to muttering amongst themselves. Within and Without While it is important to have good communications within a corporation, it is even more important to be able to communicate with those who pay the bills -- namely, your customers. A system that uses something like what vertical communications technology uses could be the answer to making sure that your customers become your guests. Customer satisfaction is predicated on clear and honest communications. Many companies miss the honesty part and substitute well-spun. If your message cannot be overwhelmingly positive, that is okay. If it cannot be overwhelmingly honest, you have a problem. Without the trust that honest communication builds, your company will only face trials and hardships in its descent into financial problems.
