One of the leading indicators to measure overall economic activity is job creation by city. The top five cities with the most job creation in 2012 were as follows: 1) Houston, TX; 2) Columbus, OH; 3) Orlando, FL; 4) Charlotte, NC; and 5) Salt Lake City, UT, according to new data from the Gallup Job Creation Index of the 50 Largest Metropolitan Areas. The data specifically mentioned that 45% of Houston-area workers expected to hire workers and expand the size of its workforce, compared to 12% who anticipated having to reduce the size of its workforce. Nationwide, 35% of employers in 2012 reported that they were hiring with 17% letting workers go. In that same vein, the five cities that showed the lowest level of job creation last year was: 1) Jacksonville, FL; 2) Riverside, CA; 3) San Diego, CA; 4) New York, NY; and 5) Buffalo, NY. As seen in these results, American cities that are part of the nation’s industrial belt have been slower to recover from the economic downturn. Central and southern California has also had a hard time recouping with unemployment levels remaining above 15% in several cities. Experts see this recent data as a positive sign for the economy and expect hiring activity to continue to improve in the biggest U.S. cities and their surrounding suburbs. As of today, there are no plans from the federal government to help the areas hardest hit by joblessness. Results from the Gallup Job Creation Index – conducted on December 31, 2012 and January 1, 2013 – were based on random samples of telephone interviews from adults (18 and older) living in the 50 largest metropolitan areas by population.
