This month Rent-A-Center announced that it will convert its remaining 18 locations in Canada to franchises that will be run by its subsidiary, ColorTyme. The Canadian outlets – located in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and the Toronto area – will still operate under the Rent-A-Centre banner (as spelled in Canada). This comes after an announcement in January 2013 that Rent-A-Center closed a deal with Easyhome to swap 15 of its Canadian stores with 15 of the Easyhome’s corporately owned stores in New York State. Easyhome then announced that it would only operate franchises in the U.S. ColorTyme has more than 34 years of experience as a U.S. franchisor of independently owned and operated rent-to-own stores, though taking over Rent-A-Center’s Canadian operations will mark its first international expansion. Rent-A-Center released a statement earlier this month stating that it will be looking for either one or several master franchisees to purchase the existing locations, with plans to develop additional stores throughout the country.
