When any person embarks on a process of determining any given coin in terms of preservation and wear, this process is referred to as coin grading. By coin, we refer to gold coins and gold bullion. In grading a coin, the three areas a person ought to take keen interest in include the quality of its die and any striking traits or features, the state and features of the coin’s blank (also known as planchet), and the exact extent of damage or wear together with its appeal. Whenever you hear about coin grading, it is usually the last of the three processes listed above which is being carried out. Most coin grading focuses on the examination of the coin to determine the extent of damage and wear. The grading process is also designed to evaluate whether this is a coin which still retains its appealing qualities or not. The coin would be labeled poor, fair, good or very good based on this grading system. If it meets the criteria used in grading, it could be graded as being fine, very fine or extremely fine too.
