If you have a preschool aged child who does not perceive sounds adequately, you should schedule a screening at your local hearing center. Young children need to hear in order to develop their language skills. Speech and perception of sound are closely related. There are certain behaviors your child should be exhibiting if he or she perceives sounds adequately. Developmental milestones related to language development should be met according to a specific timetable. If this isn't occurring, it's time to make an appointment with a specialist such as an audiologist or speech-language pathologist. Toddler Years At the ages of one-year and two-years old, your toddler should be acquiring language skills and demonstrating them in a variety of ways. For example, your child should be able to point to various body parts when you name them such as: hand, foot, head, eye, nose, and mouth. Many toddlers like playing this as if it were a game. Your youngster should also be able to point to pictures of objects in books. Board books which are made from thick cardboard are especially appropriate for this age group. The books are small enough for your tot to hold onto and durable enough not to be ripped. Your son or daughter should be developing an interest in simple tunes, nursery rhymes, and stories. He or she should have a vocabulary of several words and be starting to form two-word sentences such as: "cat bye-bye" or "no, mommy." Three Year Olds Three year olds should be able to speak in short sentences and should be able to label most of their environment with the right words. Although his or her speech may not be perfectly clear to a stranger on the street, your family should be able to understand it. If not, that's a red flag that there may be a problem and a need for screening at a hearing center. If everything's on track, your child's vocabulary should now be able to handle the consonants: k, n, t, d, f, and q. By this age, children should be conversing with playmates in at least basic ways. Four Year Olds When your child is four years old, he or she should be able to converse in longer sentences with you and playmates. If you call to your son or daughter from another room, he or she should hear you and respond. Answering questions that you ask should be no problem at this point. If your child can't answer you or hear you when you call, this is another red flag of a need for a screening at the hearing center. Also, if your son or daughter wants the volume on the television to be turned up quite loud at all times, this can point to trouble brewing. When it comes to your preschooler, screenings at a hearing center should be performed as soon as a problem is suspected. Their issue could be as simple as an ear infection or wax buildup which can be easily taken care of. If there are more serious problems, an audiologist or speech pathologist can diagnose and treat.
