World 10,000m and 5,000m championVivian Cheruiyot jetted out Monday night for Rome buoyant as shewill kick-start her campaign in the 12-lap race on a winning notedespite strong challenge from Ethiopia. It will be the first time in over seven months that Cheruiyot willbe running in her traditional 5,000m distance during the RomeGolden Gala, the third stop of the 2012 Samsung Diamond Leagueseries. "I have been training hard. This has always been to get my body inthe right frame. I go to Rome to launch my Olympic bid and possiblehunt for the 5,000m gold medal.
Since Daegu World Championships inSeptember last year, I have skipped running in the 5,000m distanceand Rome will be the first attempt," she said in Nairobi before herdeparture. An eagerly-anticipated sprint and endurance face off is in theoffing as Cheruiyot meets long-time rival and world indoors 3,000msilver medallist Meseret Defer of Ethiopia. Cheruiyot, who has a personal best time of 14:20.87, the thirdfastest time in history, will require her best show to beat Defarfor the second time in as many meeting. Defer has a personal best time of 14:12.88, second fastest runnerin history and a former world record holder, who won gold at the2004 Olympic Games, bronze in 2008, the world title in 2007 andfour world indoor titles.
"I beat her in Doha in the first Diamond League. But that was inthe 3,000m distance. It will be different when we meet over thelonger distance, but I have what it takes to beat her. I believe inmy own strength and nothing else matters whenever I enter a race,"she said.
Also in the field is Ethiopian Gelete Burka (14:31.20), worldsilver medallist Sylvia Kibet. "The race in Rome will probable showcase what to expect in Londonduring the Olympics. With an exception of one or two athletes, whatwe will have in this race is pure class and the best will triumphand get an edge as the build up to London continues," saidCheruiyot. Alongside the women's 5,000m race, other Kenyans who jetted outMonday for the Diamond League race are Paul Kipsiele Koech, EzekielKemboi, Richard Mateelong and Brimin Kipruto.
The quartet has avoided each other this season, opting to competein shorter or longer races whenever an opportunity arose. But asfate has it, they clash in Rome in what is dubbed a Kenyan trialfor the Olympics in the water and hurdle event. The remarkably consistent Kemboi (PB 7:55.76) won the Olympic titlein 2004 and has won a medal at each of the last five editions ofthe World Championships, capped by successive golds in 2009 and2011. Koech (PB 7:56.37 clocked in Rome 2005) won Olympic bronze in 2004and has produced eight of history's 32 sub-eight minuteperformances. Kipruto won the 2008 Olympic title and was Olympic silver medallistin Athens and won the world title in Osaka.
Last year he narrowly missed Saif Shaheen's world record (7:53.63)by just one one-hundredth of a second. Mateelong is the latestspecialist able to dip under the eight minutes barrier afterclocking 7:56.81 in Doha on May 11. He boasts three major medals: the Olympic bronze in Beijing, and asilver and bronze at the World Championships. "The world record is not in our mind, at least not for me.
We arelaunching our season in this competition and I do not think we havethe consistence to hunt down the record," said Mateelong. The challenge for the Kenyans will come from Frenchman MahiedineMekhissi Banabbad. Special Report: London Olympics 2012.
