Visiting Chinese Foreign MinisterYang Jiechi met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong onMonday to discuss bilateral relations and regional cooperation. Lee said that Singapore attached great importance to developing itsrelations with China and that he was happy with the constantprogress achieved by both countries in cooperation in variousfields. The Singapore prime minister said he saw the potential in theChinese economy to achieve further sustained fast growth andexpected it to be more vital in the future. It is necessary for the two countries to boost the efforts to sharetheir experience and extend their cooperation, and to work togethercreatively to find solutions for future global challenges, he said. Singapore thinks highly of China's efforts to boost its cooperationwith the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) , and it iswilling to work together with China to promote regional cooperationand development, he said. Yang said that the relation between the two important partnercountries is growing fast. The leaders of the two nations over the generations have attachedgreat significance to the bilateral relations and tried to learnfrom the experience of each other. They achieved mutual benefitthat results in win-win outcome by promoting bilateral cooperationthat fits well with the respective conditions, strengths anddevelopment strategies of the two countries, Yang said. The Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Eco-City, both majorcooperation projects between the two countries, have been playingexemplary roles in the region, Yang said. The foreign minister said China is willing to make efforts togetherwith Singapore to promote bilateral mutual trust in politics andsecurity and mutual benefit in trade and economy, and draw on theexperience of each other in facilitating social and culturaldevelopment. The Chinese side extended an invitation for Lee to visit China at aconvenient time. Yang also said he saw significant momentum in the development ofEast Asian regional cooperation, citing the progress in mechanismssuch as the integration within ASEAN, the ASEAN+1 cooperation thatinvolves the 10-member bloc and its dialogue partners, the ASEAN+3mechanism that involves China, Japan and South Korea, thecooperation between China, Japan and South Korea, as well as theEast Asian Summit. Constant progress is being achieved in practical regionalcooperation in trade, economy and finance, social and culturalfields as well as energy and environment protection, he said. China looks forward to work together with the ASEAN member nations,including Singapore, to find new areas of cooperation and growth todrive the development of East Asia, Yang said.
