Summer is upon us evoking images of beaches, barbecues, and vacation. While most of us spend our winters waiting for the promise of June, July and August, these months also present homeowners with a challenge in energy efficient cooling. With the “green” movement growing momentum coupled with the increasing cost of power, it is both socially and economically advantageous for homeowners to invest in green solutions. However, this is easier said than done. The majority of us are familiar with antiquated window units and costly central air as answers for summer cooling. Replacing these systems can be a daunting task that often times results in frustration and confusion. Enmojo is a Boston based energy-efficiency company aimed at simplifying this process. The startup provides a free online platform to consumers, offering information on energy incentives and technology options, while also connecting homeowners with local area contactors to install customized energy solutions. Enmojo focuses mainly on heating and cooling, advocating the use of ductless systems. What is ductless and why is it a convenient solution to heating and cooling? Ductless refers to a unit’s ability to be installed without the use of ductwork. Many of the older homes so prevalent in the Northeast do not have the spatial capabilities necessary for ductwork, and therefore central heating and cooling systems. Given this limitation ductless present the easiest, cheapest, and most energy efficient heating and cooling solution for residences. Ductless systems have two major components: “a unit mounted on an inside wall that delivers cool air to the room and a unit mounted on the outside of the house. Ductless is installed by drilling a 3 inch hole through an exterior wall and running a pair of refrigerant lines run between the two units, one delivering electricity, the other taking away condensate (water). The system also has thermostatic control and a variable quiet blower.” The economical, user-friendly, and efficient solution to summer heat is ductless air conditioning.
