So that the pump works effectively, the clearances between the gear teeth and wall have to be very small. After using the pump for sometime, it will slowly begin to loose its efficiency since the clearances tend to expand due to wear and tear by constant use. Gear pumps are of two main types - internal and external pumps. The gerotor, which is an internal gear pump, has two gears. A smaller sized gear fits inside a larger one and collectively these two rotate in one single motion in the same direction. The small gear always has one tooth less than the larger gear. This smaller gear is mounted off-center compared to the shaft of the larger gear, which lets the internal gear to freely rotate inside the external gear. Also this simultaneously, provides space for the liquid to flow from the intake point to the discharge space. When power is given to the shaft of the internal gear, it drives the external gear. The external gear pumps are made up of two identical gears that rotate in opposite directions. The space between the gear teeth and the sides of the pump chamber lets the liquid flow. The shaft of the driving gear is given power, which then powers the other gear. External gear pumps usually use spur gears.
