Surrogacy is a big boon to the world wherein 1 out of every 5 couples face issues of infertility. Fertility problems have taken a steadfast increase in the past few years and technology is catching up to meet the needs of such scenarios. Couple of years back if a man was azoospermic (without any sperms) or severely oligospermic (very few sperms), it meant that adoption was the only way to complete their family. Many families were broken because of the trauma and indistinctness they faced in taking up that decision. However with the accidental blessing discovery of ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) many of these couples had their genetic baby and their happiness knew no bounds. As years passed by couples started facing bigger problems than just blocked tubes or ovarian failure or azoospermia. Couples had several cycles of IVF performed but with no luck. On the contrary due to other discomforts some women had to undergo hysterectomy (removal of uterus). This meant that the woman was unable to carry her own baby as the natural incubator was removed. Many such couples sorted to adoption as this was the only choice for them. But because these issues started increasing, medicine went a step ahead to help them and began surrogacy programs. It was easy to find several normal, healthy women who were ready to carry the child of another woman so as to help them realize their dreams. And thus dawned Traditional surrogacy and Altruistic surrogacy programs. Traditional surrogacy is no longer legal in many countries and that leaves couples with the option of Altruistic surrogacy. In altruistic surrogacy the couples undergo an IVF cycle and the resulting embryos are then inserted into the womb of another lady willing to carry the pregnancy to term for the couple. This procedure has seen great amount of success and is soon becoming widely accepted. But there are certain difficulties and troubles that the surrogate mother faces when undergoing an altruistic surrogacy. To top the list is the emotional attachment she develops towards the growing fetus in her womb. It is but obvious that the lady carrying a pregnancy is bound to have some amount of attachment to the fetus in her womb. So the question arises as to how will the surrogate mother overcome this barricade? Here are some ways in which we help the surrogate mother to overcome her troubles • The surrogate mother is counseled time and again. She has long hours of counseling with a counselor who reminds her of why she is a surrogate mother to a childless couple • We encourage some of the surrogate mothers to know a little history of the intended parents who need her services. This makes her aware of the troubles the couple has gone through and she becomes all the more alert and happy to give the baby back to the intended parents • Most of the time we avoid the surrogate mother from seeing the baby that she has delivered, so that the bonding between her and the child remains minimal • We encourage surrogate mothers to constantly talk to the intended couples for whom she is carrying a baby, so that she sees their enthusiasm and wait the arrival of their baby • We remind surrogate mothers that they perform these services so that they can give a better future to the own children and this is a driving force for them to complete their surrogacy cycle with utmost honesty and promptness • The payments that the surrogate mother gets for her services, helps her build her home and give a better life for her children and hence she undergoes all the pain and delivers the baby to the intended parents • There is constant counseling and support to the surrogate mother post the delivery so that she remains strong headed and steadfast. She is supervised and is under medical support for the next 3 months post delivery. With all these precautions a surrogate mother is not left disheartened or sad but is willing to undergo another surrogacy cycle to spread joy and happiness to many childless couples. We are a strong support to the surrogate mother and will be with her if she needs any help. None so far have undergone an emotional or mental breakdown but have tackled their emotional disturbances well with our assistance. This fact makes several intended couples happy and willing to undergo surrogacy by choosing their own surrogate mother. We encourage couples to meet with the lady who carries their baby and understand her needs. It is indeed a win-win situation and all are happy post the cycle. Intended couples leave thanking the surrogate mother profusely. Resources: - Global Surrogacy India is one of its kind team of dedicated professionals providing all the services under one roof.
