Lootera Movie Review Set in an era of the 1950's, 'Lootera' is a story about Pakhi (Sonakshi Sinha) and Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer Singh). The movie starts with an old man coughing, he is the Zamindar of Manickpur, Pakhi's father. Pakhi lived in Manickpur, West Bengal with her father in an aristocratic world. Comes in a con-man Varun who seeks help from the Zamindar of Manickpur for a project. His project is to steal an ancient idol from the temple in the town. Varun has in the meantime impressed him with his knowledge about music and books and thus Varun and his friend are allowed to stay with Pakhi and his father. In no time he win's Pakhi's heart and they both along with her father's blessings decide to get married. But all is not well, misfortune strikes and a night before the wedding, Varun absconds, leaving Pakhi and her father shocked. Pakhi is trying to gather her shattered life when she gets another blow when her father passes away. Trying to move on Pakhi shifts to Dalhousie, where as expected she comes face to face with Varun. What happens next? Does she forgive him? Leave him? Punish him? Does she still hate him? You need to watch the movie Lootera to know... Director Vikramditya Motwane who won many hearts with his maiden venture 'Udaan' has got the right ingredients for this period film as well. Till the interval Lootera is picture perfect, but all of a sudden you are left in-between a murder, a murderer, a lover, some misunderstandings, and a little bit of confusion as to why did this all happen. The last 20 mins is where director Vikramditya Motwane goes wrong. But the question in your mind still remains, will the two get together again? That is what keeps you stuck to your seats. Ranveer Singh as Varun is perfect. He has proved that the young lad can do whatever he is offered be it the bubbly Bittoo in 'Band Baaja Baarat' or the calm and poised Varun in 'Lootera'. His eyes made his acting much more effective. Sonakshi Sinha as Pakhi is one of the better performances of the actress, who is getting better with every movie she is doing. She plays a childlike innocent woman who is hopelessly in love with a handsome man. Her emotional intelligence is what takes her acting as Pakhi a notch higher. But as a couple, Ranveer-Sonakshi lacked that dazzling chemistry as expected. Vikrant Massey as Varun’s friend Deb is one more genius discovery by Motwane. Earlier seen in many TV soaps, Vikrant is surely here to stay. Barun Chanda as Pakhi's father, Adil Husain as the investigator do complete justice to their short roles. Arif Zakaria, Dibyendu Bhattacharya and debutante Shirin Guha do not get much screen space, but in the given time they leave lasting impressions on the minds of the audience. All in all the 50's romance, set-up all work well for the movie, very well directed executed and worked upon, 'Lootera' is not for those who like those over-board Bollywood masala flicks. The movie is for true lovers. Making perfect use of silence, music and whispers, the movie charms you with the use of vintage cars, opulent havelis, authentic costumes. Not a masterpiece in itself, Lootera is a must watch if you wish to watch some real, sensible cinema.
