Business cards were preceded by the visiting and trading cards of old times. The trading cards were used as a means of advertising a business or a shop as the media advertisement at those times lacked the punch and appeal of today’s media. Visiting cards of yester year were used to announce formal introduction of important people. They were used by culturally rich societies. They were common on the upper tier and class of people such as aristocrats. Both of these set of cards merged as business cards of the modern era. These cards are efficient and follow practical application. These are designed to deliver you the means of business introduction in front of an unknown person. These business cards are used at official meetings, symposiums and exhibitions to share your personal information with people of common interest or goal. Most of the times, these cards are used as your introduction of being an employee of a particular organization or company. A typical business card provides all this functionality. Business cards usually contain card holder’s name with more importance. They also have a company logo, name and your affiliation to the company such as Manager. These cards then mention information regarding on how to contact you through both personal and official company channels. These cards sometimes contain extensive information such as your National Tax Number as well as your bank account. It is up to the will of a person to share whatever information he wants to share to others when handing out a business card. Business cards were used to be printed in black ink on a white card stock background which usually has a glossy finish. Business cards are printed on a white card stock usually. Many printing methods and finishing techniques are used in various parts of the world. The most common card stock has 350 g/m2 density of the sheet. Printing presses are used for the bulk production of business cards as it lowers the overall cost of individual cards. High quality business cards are now printed using spot colors which have a good finish. Many colors can be used for printing. Digital printing has lowered the cost of overall printing and has also eased the difficulty in designing various complex and illustrative cards. Raised print cards give the effect of being important and beautiful. These types of cards were prepared using engraving plates through an expensive process. They can now be produced using thermography. It is a process of using plastic powder which sticks to ink which is then sealed to the paper using heat to give the writing an added height on the paper. Four color printing processes by using presses have become common to produce colors using an inexpensive technique. These prints can however form small dots when used for small designing and fonts. Many different materials are also used these days for the printing of business cards. There are also cards available now that are printed on plastic which may be translucent or crystal clear. Some people also like to use metal, rubber, magnetic material and even real wood for printing their business cards. Some people also like to use silk and other such materials for use in business cards which give a lavish look and tell a lot about the personality and taste of the business card holder.
