New data reveals that women treated with radiation to the chest forchildhood cancer have a high risk of developing breast cancer similar to that of women with BRCA1/2 mutations. The study, led byMemorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center biostatistician ChayaMoskowitz, PhD, was presented today at the 2012 American Society ofClinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. "Previous studies have shown that women treated with radiation tothe chest for childhood cancer have an increased risk for breastcancer, but ours is the first to demonstrate that their risk iscomparable to women with BRCA mutations," said Dr. Moskowitz."While most women are aware that hereditary mutations can increasetheir risk for breast cancer, few are aware that radiation to thechest can also increase this risk, including the women whothemselves were treated." Analyzing data from more than 1,200 female childhood cancersurvivors participating in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study(CCSS) and 4,570 female first-degree relatives of womenparticipating in the Women's Environmental Cancer and RadiationEpidemiology (WECARE) Study, Dr. Moskowitz and colleagues foundthat breast cancer incidence by age 50 among women treated withchest radiation for a childhood cancer was 24 percent compared to31 percent for carriers of BRCA1 mutations. Among survivors ofHodgkin lymphoma (who were treated with higher doses of radiation), the incidencewas 30 percent. "It's not just survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma who are at risk ofdeveloping breast cancer but survivors of other childhood cancerstypically treated with more-moderate doses of radiation," Moskowitzadded. "The issue is not just the dose of radiation. The volume ofbreast tissue that is exposed to radiation is also a criticalfactor." The Children's Oncology Group recommends that women treated withradiation of 20 Gy or higher to the chest begin breast cancersurveillance with annual mammography and breast MRI starting at age25 or eight years after radiation, whichever occurs last. However, this study found that women receiving lower doses of chestradiation were also at risk for breast cancer and thus may alsobenefit from a breast cancer screening. Approximately 50,000 women in the United States have been treatedwith chest radiation of 20 Gy or higher and an estimated additional7,000,000 have been treated with radiation of 10 Gy.
