The fiords were carved out and the erosive effect of a glacier during the last ice age formed the dramatic landscape feature. The beautiful fiords are located at the northern most end of Fiord land National Park on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. They have become a national icon. Some of the sounds are approximately as high as a thousand meters. It is filled with spectacular natural features that create a remote and rugged beauty. It is believed that the Fiords were discovered about a thousand years ago. The sounds also have an intriguing and unique underwater environment, one of the most rated beautiful environments in the world, and the marine reserves that exist also have an interesting effect of the high rainfall in the area. As the rainfall drains through the lush rainforests, it becomes stained with a tannin color of strong tea. The Sounds have an annual mean rainfall of 6,813 millimeters (mm). It is known as the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places in the world. In a day, the rainfall can reach up to 250mm during a span of 24 hours. Due the large amount of rain that falls in this place, the Sounds have dozens of temporary waterfalls that go down through the cliffs and the vast rainforests, some reaching a thousand meters high.
