If your answer yes, then you probably shouldn’t try importing cars from Japan, because you will really need to follow the guidelines, regulations, and instructions for importation into Mozambique. If however, you relish manuals with gusto and follow instructions to the letter, then you will surely have an easy time buying a Japanese car and having it shipped to you. Following the import regulations could spell the different between getting a good car that’s within your budget and getting a car you have to pay extra for. To avoid making this kind of mistake, choose wisely and be guided by the import process. What may be imported? Mozambicans are actually very lucky in this regard because there are no strict rules about what vehicle models may be imported. There is no age restriction and even though Mozambique is a right-hand driving country, either left-hand drive or right-hand drive vehicles may be imported. Buyers will just have to make sure that the cars they are buying are in good working order. For this, they must closely communicate with the dealers about the car’s condition, and have the car inspected in Japan prior to shipment to Mozambique. Why is the inspection needed? Perhaps the only major requirement on vehicles that has been set by the Mozambican government when importing cars from Japan is that all used cars entering the country should be inspected first to make sure these are in proper condition, and are safe and roadworthy. The pre-shipment inspection is done by Intertek Government and Trade Services, the official company appointed by the Government of Mozambique to carry out the inspection in Japan. What’s my role in the inspection process? As the buyer, you should apply for the inspection of your vehicle while it is still in Japan. You need to first apply for a MOZ number for the vehicle from the Intertek office in Rua da Namaacha, 492 (Complexo de Frexpo) located in Maputo. Make sure you bring the invoice with the engine number. This must have been sent to you by the exporter. You also need to accomplish the Pre-Advice Form for the car and submit it to the Intertek office. When Intertek has received it, they will get in contact with the exporter and arrange for the inspection. How long do I have to wait while importing cars from Japan? The pre-shipment inspection can take up to ten days. If the results are satisfactory, Intertek will send you a certification that your car has been found to be roadworthy. The exporter can now arrange for shipment. If your car arrives without a certificate, it will have to be inspected at port. If found to be in poor condition it may be rejected, and you will have to spend thousands of money to ship it back. If you want to avoid this situation, make sure your car goes through the pre-shipment inspection process. As you can see, the inspection process is very important and you shouldn’t miss any step.
