Built in the 7th century, this majestic temple is one of the largest and oldest temples of the city. Devoted to Harihara, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, this temple has been built in the Kalinga architectural style. Today, managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and Temple Trust Board, the Lingaraj Temple was constructed by the Somavamsi Dynasty while few additions were made by the Ganga rulers. There are 150 different shrines in the temple complex that is enclosed by a huge compound wall made of laterite and measures 160 m by 142 m. This temple consists of four components, including assembly hall (jagamohana), sanctum (vimana), hall for offerings (bhoga-mandapa) and festival hall (natamandira). Made of laterite and sandstone, this glorious temple has the main entrance facing east while there are two small entrances from the north and south directions. Based on Deula (Kalinga architecture) style, the structures starting from the hall for offerings till the main sanctum, increase in height. Hundreds of devotees visit here each day, and this number increases during celebrations of the Shivratri Festival in the temple.
