The most effective way to find out about bitcoin is to leap in and get one or two in your "pocket" to get an understanding of how they work. Regardless of the hype about how tricky and deadly it can be, getting bitcoins is a lot simpler and safer in comparison to you could think. In a large amount of ways it is maybe less complicated than opening a new account at a normal bank. And, given what's been taking place in the bank system, it is perhaps safer as well. There are a couple of things to learn: getting and employing a software wallet, learning to send and receive money, learning the best way to buy bitcoin from somebody or an exchange. Before starting, you're going to need to get a wallet. That can be done simply enough by signing up with one of the exchanges which may host wallet for you. And, though I believe you will most likely want to have one or two exchange wallets ultimately, you must begin with one on your own PC both to get a better feel for bitcoin and as the exchanges are still experimental themselves. When we can that stage of the debate, I'm going to be advising you get in the practice of moving your cash and coins off the exchanges or widening across exchanges to keep your cash safe. It's a way to store your bitcoins. In particular, it is software which has been engineered to store bitcoin. It's simple to run on your desktop PC, laptop computer, mobile gadget ( except, at the present, Apple ) and may also be made to store bitcoins on stuff like thumb drives. If you're nervous about being hacked, then that could be a great choice. Even the Winklevoss* twins, who've millions invested in bitcoin, put their investment on hard drives which they then put into a safety box. The Winklevoss twins are those who originally had the concept for a social network site that became Facebook. They employed Mark Zuckerberg who took their concept as his very own and became massively rich. Below you can download the first bitcoin wallet, or customer, in Windows or Mac format. These aren't just wallets, but are actually part of the bitcoin network. They're going to receive, store, and send your bitcoins. You can create one or two addresses with a click (an address is a number that looks like this : 1LyFcQatbg4BvT9gGTz6VdqqHKpPn5QBuk ). You'll see a field where you can cut and paste a number like this from somebody you would like to send money to and off it'll go right into that person's wallet. You may also make a QR code which should let somebody take a picture with an application on their telephone and send you some bitcoin. It is brilliantly safe to give these out - the address and QR code are both for my donations page. Be happy to give! NOTE: This sort of wallet acts both as a wallet for you and as a part of the bitcoin system. The explanation bitcoin works is that each exchange is broadcast and recorded as a number across the whole system (implying that each exchange is confirmed and made irrevocable by the network itself ). Any PC with the right software can join that system, checking and supporting the network. This wallet serves as your private wallet and also as a support for that system. Be advised that it'll take up 8-9 gigs of your computer's memory. After you install the wallet, it'll take as much as a day for the wallet to sync with the network. This is standard, doesn't harm your PC, and makes the system in total safer, so it's a smart idea.
