The beach is a great place to kick back, relax, and soak up the great outdoors – but it’s important to remember that you’ll also be soaking up UV rays! If you’re planning to spend time at the beach this summer, Tambi Renee has a few tips for staying safe. Go Early or Go Late Avoid being in the direct sun between 10am and 4pm. If you’re a morning person, that means laying out your towel bright and early and leaving once the sun reaches its peak. Alternatively, go to the beach in the evening and enjoy the cool sunset. Either way, you’ll protect your skin and avoid the crowds that tend to congregate during the hottest part of the day. Cover Up While you might want to show off what you’ve got with a skimpy bikini, consider wearing clothing of a little more substance when you’re at the beach during hotter parts of the day. Tightly woven fabrics can protect you from the sun’s rays. If you plan to be out for a while, think about bringing something to throw on over your swimsuit. Protect Your Eyes and Face The face can be especially sensitive to UV rays, so be extra careful. Wear sunglasses to keep your eyes healthy and reduce strain and consider a broad-brimmed hat to keep the sun off of your face and neck. Sunscreen Wisely Wear a high-SPF sunscreen – at least SPF 35. Apply it 30 minutes before you head out the door, not when you get the beach. After that, reapply your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re sweating a lot or are spending time in the water (even if you use a waterproof sunscreen). Make sure that your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB spectrum rays. Make Use of Shade Mark out your spot with a big beach umbrella and enjoy the extra cool and shade. If you don’t want to lug around an umbrella to shield you from the sun, look for a pavilion or shady area of the beach.
