Mosaic tiles are used indoors and out for decorative floor and wall coverings. Mosaics are defined as tiles measuring two inches or smaller, and therefore contain a lot of grout throughout an installation. Place the tip of the knife between two tesserae, or mosaic tiles, and dig in a downward motion. Take care not to scratch the edges of the tesserae as you work. Chip out the grout a little at a time, and change the blade on the knife whenever it ceases to bite into the grout. Secondly, mix the new grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. The resulting grout should resemble peanut butter when done. Thirdly, scoop a small amount of grout onto the tesserae at a time with a grout float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle to the tesserae and press the grout down as you drag the float across. Make several passes over each section of mosaic pattern, coming from different angles to ensure that grout gets placed between around each tile. Fourthly, wipe the surface of the tesserae carefully with a grout sponge to remove the excess grout. Use a slightly dampened sponge and make one pass over the mosaics with the clean side of the sponge before rinsing. Change the water you rinse with frequently to avoid haze. Let the grout and tesserae set up and dry for at least 24 hours. Tips & Warnings If possible, schedule your regrouting when no rain is in the forecast.
