Having really great looking hanging baskets and containers this season isn't beyond you, as this article will show. By following a few simple rules you will surprise yourself. Number one is to be sure to use a good quality compost and most definitely not basic garden soil. Everyday normal garden soil would compact too much with the frequent watering needed, and simply “suffocate” the roots of your plants. Apart from that the roots would have a tough time getting through the soil to find much needed nutrients. Good compost mixes such as Fafard or Pro-Mix use ingredients like perlite, peat, and others that produce a soil that will not compact over the summer months, plus they contain a small amount of nutrients. You can re-use your artificial potting soil from year to year, so it's not a big expense. Just dump it out of the pot, break it up with a spade to cut up all last year’s roots and add about one tenth (by volume) of new compost. A little fertilizer wouldn't go wrong as well. This type of compost will increase the air around the roots and give your new plants a good nutritional start in life. After about the first month it's a good idea to feed your plants weekly. Apart from the fertilizer your plants use there is also a certain amount lost from the bottom of the container each time you water it. I use a fish-emulsion liquid feed with seaweed to provide all the trace nutrients my plants require and recommend it highly. You can use any liquid plant food such as Miracle Grow or Schultz, though it is worth taking the trouble to find one that contains the small amounts of trace elements that promote growth. If you can be bothered making your own compost tea then you will have an excellent liquid plant food that will give you plants with bigger and better blooms as well as increased vigour. Last but not least – in fact probably most important - no matter what size of container you're using it is very important that you soak it all the way to the bottom every time you water it. Keep on going until until water comes out from the pot bottom. This will ensure that the root system reaches all parts of the container and grow properly. And never allow the container to completely dry out as bone dry compost can be extremely difficult to re-soak. Happy gardening. This will ensure The alternative gardener that the root system reaches all parts of the container Gardening and grow properly.
