There’s a real reluctance amongst some homeowners to incorporate black bedroom into their home’s décor – especially in the bedroom. In general there’s a feeling that too much black bedroom furniture, with black walls, and maybe the faintest dash of a vibrant shade could prove to be too dark. Whilst obviously beneficial during those summer mornings when the sun rises early in the day, a bedroom decorated entirely in black is hardly the most inspiring thing to look at, is it? Dramatic – yes; the kind of view that motivates you to drag yourself out of bed on a miserable winter’s morning – absolutely not. A balance needs to be struck when decorating a room in black, or else you could end with a photography darkroom, rather than a comfortable bedroom. For example, a feature wall, decorated in colourfully patterned wallpaper, or painted in a light hue, will bring a surprising amount of light into the room. Soft furnishings such as carpets, rugs, bedspreads and curtains can be used to bring even more colour to a room – providing the perfect backdrop for black bedroom furniture. However, consistency should feature heavily in any room’s design. This means, if possible, the dashes of lighter shades should be similar. If you’re redesigning your room for scratch, opt for a softly toned carpet. If this isn’t possible use a rug as a substitute. The flooring will contrast well with the black bedroom furniture in the room - whether a wrought-iron bed, a lacquered black bookcase, or a classy high gloss wardrobe. At the same time it won’t dominate. You should certainly avoid browns, burgundies and navy blues, as these colours will clash – leaving you with an ugly look. Homeowners that have a walk-in wardrobe in their bedroom could benefit from installing some of their smaller pieces of black bedroom furniture in it. For example, a small set of drawers could be fitted in spacious walk-in wardrobe not to save space, but to limit the amount of black bedroom furniture on display at any one time. Of course, you could still a larger chest of drawers on display, but try to employ restraint when it comes to smaller pieces of black bedroom furniture. For homeowners that don’t have walk-in wardrobes, but have an abundance of black bedroom furniture, good additional light can help. If you find that your room still looks dark, despite having the main light switched on, why not install a couple of floor lamps in the spare corners, or bedside lamps? This lighting can help to create a sense of warmth, and make a room – with black bedroom furniture - appear more inviting when the nights draw in. Lightly coloured ornaments and accents, like vases, mirrors and pieces of artwork, can also be employed to counteract the darkness of black bedroom furniture. Too many ornaments can make the room seem cluttered, though, so be picky with your choices. Provided you take right level of care and attention, and develop a good idea of the look you want to achieve, it’s possible to create a glamorous look with black bedroom furniture. Black bedroom furniture can be used to create a wonderfully classy look. This article looks at some of the rules homeowners should stick to when decorating a bedroom in black.
