When you go to see a band perform live, most bands these days have a member sitting or standing behind a laptop. The laptop may be connected to a keyboard or many other types of input devices. Each note has a pitch, length, and possibly other qualities as well. Once the sequencing has been completed by recording input from a keyboard or by manual entry, the music can be played back.
