Recently, supported by the American municipal solid street lighting committee (MSSLC), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published a report on comparison test reports of the gateway performance of the nine kinds of LED lamps and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. The trial, initiated in Kansas City Missouri in 2011,which proved that LED lights were not worse than HPS lamp performance in any way, such as light intensity or effect. However, solid-state lighting (SSL) products indeed can produce more lumens on the road, while reducing the scattered light. The experiment involved 100W, 150W, 250W and 400W LED tunnel light and LED street light that are used to replace the high pressure sodium lamp. Lighting products include 63W LED tunnel light and LED street light used to replace 100W HPS and 291W LED lamps replaced 400W high pressure sodium lamp. The measured energy reduction ranged from 31% to 51%, with an average is 39%. However, the average lumens LED lamps produce is 31% less than that of the high pressure sodium lamp Although the efficacy of the two LED lamps compared is lower than that of the high-pressure sodium,yet the average efficiency of the LED tunnel light and LED street light is 15% higher than the HPS. By comparing the number of state and input power exposed to the target area, the application effect is more obvious. However, there are still two kinds of lighting whose efficacy performing is below the existing high pressure sodium lamp. However, in some cases, the advantages of the LED lights is very obvious. For example, 130WLED street lights and LED tunnel light used to replace the 150W HPS, their average application efficiency advantages is 83lm / W ratio 45.1lm / W. As can be seen in the report ,the tested for the LED and HPS products are in the vicinity of the light emitted from the light spilling circumstances. However, compared with the non-fugitive 250W light, the luminous efficiency of the LED lamp is 47lm / W, and the high pressure sodium lamp is only 33.6lm / W. In comparison test 400W, the performance of a LED lamp is better, and the other is worse. According to another report released by the DOE recently showed that outdoor lighting, LED streetlight and LED tunnel light are continuing efforts to replace 400W HPS. Currently there have been some cases of 400W replacement on the market. Taking these results, the gateway report concluded, the applications effect of the LED lighting is slightly prominent over that of the HPS lighting. However, SSL lighting can provide more efficient and uniform illumination light while reducing fugitive, so its energy savings is better. The report also predicted what the LED products made impact on the maintenance costs. There is currently a project in Kansas City, which responsible for monitoring illumination level t and timely replacing the lamp whose performance is below the design standards. The study also included that the optical loss based on the assessment of lumen maintenance factors, the results showed that the two high-pressure sodium lamps needs to be replaced before the expected life. This conclusion also applies to certain LED products, but the replacement cycle is 30 years. The study did not disclose the actual maintenance costs, but solid-state lighting products undoubtedly have a significant advantage in this area.
