All about the Patchwork Art and the Fabrics Used

Art and Culture
Patchwork items are today in huge demand all over the country. But its origin was very humble as compared to other crafts. When people’s clothes or bed sheets started fraying or torn the women generally stitched that part with an extra piece of cloth which was no more than a rag. Even quilts were also made from pieces of cloths which were discarded. Soldiers used to use these quilts under the armors to keep them warm and protected.

Over the years this humble patchworking craft have turned into a fashion statement today and this industry is now reaping huge profits. Earlier it was the women who were engaged in this work but now many creative people enroll themselves to these courses as it is a booming business. Patchworking is basically needlework in which bits or pieces of cloths are sewed together to get a bigger pattern. It is also known as piece work. Now this art form is not just restricted to quilting. Today bed sheets, handicraft items, curtains, cushion covers are common patchwork products. Even many fashion designers use this art in creating apparels.

Piece work has now evolved as an art form in several countries Australia being one of them. Newer techniques as well as patterns are being used to make the work more efficient. Fabrics plays the most important role in this craft and so choosing the right one is very important. In fact Patchwork Fabric in Australia are readily available in the online stores in varied ranges of colors as well as designs.

Some of the commonly used fabrics for patchwork art are discussed below. • Cotton is the most common fabric that quilt makers prefer using as it is durable and easy to work on. Now it is available in varied colors as well as patterns to make the quilts look more unique. • Another commonly used material for piece work is calico. It is basically a strong weave fabric mostly available in white or natural colors with darker flecks. • The organza is delicate textile which is mainly woven from silk or synthetic fibers. Patchwork makers love this material because it is available in plan colors with brilliant and metallic effects. • Using silk for various patchwork items can make them really worth appreciating. This fabric is woven from the natural fibers produced by the silk forms. The best thing about it is that it is available in various colors, textures, designs and weights. Other materials used are satin, taffeta, shantung, organdy and Gingham. Using these various fabrics and adding creative ideas beautiful products are being made. These items are in great demand today though the products are quite expensive.
