Also known as the Great Indian Desert, Thar Desert forms the Western Frontier of India and comprises of the states of Rajasthan, a part of Haryana and Punjab and a small portion of Gujarat. The Thar Desert encompasses nearly 200,000 sq. km of arid barren desolate landscape characterized by gigantic sand dunes littered with thorny bushes, stomach churning heat, and dust storms with winds gusting at velocities of 140-150 Km/hr. Its merciless weather notwithstanding, the Thar Desert entices tourists and explorers for every year from various nook and corners of the world. The Thar Desert the only sandy recluse in India, gives enough reasons to celebrate the colors of life and the expressions of life, culture, fun and adventure. Apart from the cultural profligacy of Rajasthan, which is apparent all over and an added element of expecting the unexpected always remains round the corner. Thar camel safari across the sands of the Great Indian Thar Desert is a rare experience; while it might not seem very apt, but it is a thrilling and measured way of absorbing the captivating beauty of desert. Pushkar Fair 2013 is considered as the doors to the Thar Desert and is the best place to undertake a camel safari. One starts imagining oneself living the life of a nomad traversing through stretches of sand in the desert interspersed by hillocks and sandy and gravel plains. We sometimes pass ladies carrying their earthen pots on top of their heads to fetch water from far off places. Discovering remote far flung villages became a thing of common occurrence. As dusk descends and the sun gradually disappears into the distant horizon, we dismount from our camels to take a breather on top of the desert dunes and look far ahead into the vast expanses of the desert and sight is mesmerizing. We decide to set up a camp in the middle of the desert on advice of our Guide. Lying down under the starry skies and watching shooting stars in the starriest nights brings about a strong romantic undercurrent with it. Sleeping on the soft golden sand of deserts has its own perils as well as we play host to scorpions and snakes. Sometimes we stumbled come across an oasis characterized by green bushes and tall date palms which attracts many creatures such as gazelles, foxes, peacocks and partridges which have adapted very easily to the ways of the Thar Desert. Often riding through the desert can become tedious and monotonous, but the loud burp of the camel or the blabber of the Guide helps restore the humor quotient back. The camel safaris are usually rounded off by with an ethnical musical night which are studded with electric performances by local Rajasthani artisans at the base camps which brought to the fore the diversity of Rajasthani culture and tradition. The experience of exploring the beauty of Thar Desert on a camel back was indeed enchanting. The memories of the Camel Safari have been etched in our minds forever. It definitely erased any doubts about the camel quite befittingly known as the “Ship of the Desert.” About Author: Author loves to write articles on different topics and this article is based on Pushkar Fair 2013
