When the local two years olds can ski before walk, you know you’re in Austria. The mountains and lakes of Austria are simply breathtaking and pose a great location for all types of activity holidays. During the winter months the vast mountain region of the eastern Alps gives testing ground for any skiing and snowboarding enthusiast. During the summer these ski runs reveal themselves and become a network of hiking and picnic areas, perfect for families and exploring. January is often the coldest month in Austria and this is the perfect time to hit the slopes, as fresh snowfall can give some of the best skiing around. ‘Der Berg ruft’ (The mountain calls) is what you will see on many shop windows and spoken by locals during the summer months, and I don’t blame them. Mountain cars still operate during the summer months, allowing you to explore the area far quicker and get to areas of mountain often out of reach by walking alone. Cycling and mountain biking is big business during the summer as the melted snow paths, become perfect downhill tracks for bikers, often wearing full face helmets and body protection. Not all cycling in Austria is so extreme there are many gentle rides around the country’s magnificent lakes that will take your breath away. There are plenty of hire shops around the towns, so you need not bring your own and due to the number of cycling visitors attracted each year, local shops stock all the latest gear. Sailing and windsurfing is a huge pastime during the summer months and the warm lakes of Carinthia, offer hundreds of different lakes to choose. The Neusiedler See is Europe’s second-largest steppe lake and the lowest part in Austria. The lakes average depth is only around 1.4 meters, so the water warms very quickly through the summer months. Combine this with the prevailing summer breezes from the northwest and you have a recipe for a windsurfing and sailing heaven. Hiking along the Pinzgauer Spaziergang gives you the perfect way to see Austria’s amazing sights. A great alpine activity in which you will see jaw dropping views of the snowcapped Hohe Tauern National Park and Kitzbuhel Alps. If this is a little extreme, there are plenty of alternative hiking routes through vineyards and forests often ending at a tavern or restaurant.
