The Oakland Raiders have been participating in the NFL since 1970 when AFL and NFL merged. The team was founded in 1960, and had been with the AFL for the first ten yeas of their existence. Now, they are a member of the Western Division of the American Football Conference. For the last 52 seasons of football, the Raiders have had a mixed performance. They are the team that has had their share of love and hatred from both fans and sports writers. As the 2013 season has begun, they are holding a record of 430-363-11,including the playoff record of 25-18. During their initial years of foundation, the team had many problems both inside and outside the field. Then, in 1963, Al Davis was appointed as the head coach who brought about significant changes in the team’s performance. He was instrumental in earning the AFL title for the first time in 1967 when the team defeated Houston Oilers. They lost to Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. Encouraged by their winning performance, the team progressed immensely during the 1970s. This was the time when they bagged six vision titles, and played in six AFC championship games. They defeated Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI in 1976. They even surprised fans and opponents in 1980 when they won the second championship in Super Bowl XV. This time, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1982,they shifted to Los Angles, and went on to win their third championship in Super Bowl XVIII defeating the Washington Redskins. The following season did not bring any favorable results to the raider. From 1984 to 1995, they managed to win only one division title and played in two playoff games. Finally, in 1995, the team shifted to Oakland. Since then, the raiders struggled a lot. They were able to improve their past glory from 2010 and 2011. Though they did not play in any playoff games or made any record, they managed to finish 4-12 in 2012. For this upcoming season, the Oakland Raiders has extensive fan base. They have also refined their team culture. So far, thirteen former members have been included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
