Every ant colony is made up of the queen ant, the soldier and worker ants. The worker ants are ones that forage for food and bring it back to the nest, while the soldier ants hold base, protect the nest and the queen ant. An ant colony can have literally thousands of ants and the queen ant lays numerous eggs. The legless grubs hatch within 3-4 weeks and three weeks after that, the larvae mature. The pupation stage lasts for 2 weeks after which the adult ants emerge. The late summer mature winged-males leave their nest, mate and die. The females will then find new nesting sites. Ants are largely found in humus and dry soil. They generally build nests in gardens in lawns, flower beds and also underneath paving stones and are common in heaths and grasslands. In cities, they will find sanctuary in almost any dry spot, breed and set up their nest there. They forage far and wide from their nests and will head for homes as they are sure to find crumbs of food lying around. This food is carried back to the nest, where the rest of the colony will feed on it. If they are far away from human habitation, they live on live and dead insects, seeds and nectar. They will eat just about anything and scour for food in all places. Ants build their nests under stones, in the soil or in the stumps of trees. They will also build nests under paving stones in your garden. Sometimes, they will also occupy nests of other insects. The queen ant mates just once, stores enough sperm in her body to last a lifetime. The winged males fly to other nests and mate there as well and the population of ants in various colonies in the vicinity just keeps increasing. The foraging workers are the ones that cause the most nuisances as they are the ones that will get into all the food that is lying around. They will move across defined trails and there will be thousands of them. The black ant has more of a nuisance value and is not really a health threat. They are an unpleasant sight and also damage and defile the food that they attack.
