No journey to the warm, sunny island of Sri Lanka can be considered complete without a trip to Nuwara Eliya (which means 'City of Light'), one of its coldest regions. The city is located in the island's mountainous Central Province and is renowned for its cool climate and vast tea plantations. It is a popular tourist spot among foreigners as well as locals, many of whom go there to escape the heat. The town has several attractions although it is widely used as a base to explore the surrounding area, with many people coming here hoping to visit the Horton Plains National Park and the Piduruthalagala Mountain, both of which are located nearby. Piduruthalagala Mountain, also known as Mount Pedro in English, is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. The iconic mountain is over eight thousand feet tall (about 2,500 metres) and is home to a military base as well as the island's central communication system. The military base is located right at the peak and is off limits to the public. However, it is possible to scale certain points of this massive hill. Piduruthalagala Mountain is covered in lush greenery and is home to a number of endemic plants and animals. It is a highly scenic spot and a 'must visit', especially for nature lovers. The best time to visit the place is between April and May, as there is less rainfall during this period. The mountain is situated not too far from Nuwara Eliya and one can spot it from almost anywhere in the city. There are plenty of buses that go to the site or one can hire a three wheeler (tuk tuk in the vernacular). The staff at one's hotel can also be very helpful when it comes to making travel arrangements.
