Storm season continues to gain in strength, especially in areas near coastal regions. While high wind damage claims with insurance companies have increased in recent years, many homes without proper preparation see unnecessary damage, resulting in both increased premiums and deductible expenses. In order to protect your home against high winds and tornado damage, it’s important to understand the tornado forces acting on a roof. What a Tornado Does to a Roof Tornado as well all know change the air flow, force, and direction randomly. This creates forces that act upon a home from all directions. Those forces will also change based on the trajectory of the tornado. As the tornado passes by different walls will feel the brunt of the wind’s force. When a tornado nears a home, the wind that normally blows over the roof creates an inward collapsing force on the wall receiving the majority of the wind. Advancement walls experience force that pushes them outward, away from the home. Upward force is also generated, which peels the roof back. Many homeowners often describe the effects on a tornado on a roof as if a bomb had gone off. Coincidentally the resulting damage gives that appearance because of the process of the roof’s destruction. As a tornado rips a roof off, it decreases the stability of the walls of the home. Those walls rely on structural support given by the roofing system. The roof is actually compromised by the weakest attachment point. Forces acting on a roof will compromise the weakest point first. As each attachment point is broken, the roof becomes more unstable, until a critical failure occurs. Add Structural Supports Most communities in areas prone to high wind damage have special build code that regulates how a roof should be installed and secured to the home. Big components of reinforcing materials for a home under high winds are hurricane clips. Hurricane clips are attached to the home, either on the outside or inside of a home (for better concealment). Additionally, hurricane clips can be removed and reused so the homeowner can continue to use the clips for future storms. Many homeowners elect to have hurricane clips installed permanently and on the inside of the home because they are not seen from the exterior. Providing north of 1500 pounds of additional reinforcement, hurricane clips can hold a roof in place under extremely harsh conditions. However, hurricane clips are subject to the same type of failure as other roofing attachments, in that they can break in order from weakest to strongest connections. Improperly installed hurricane clips can break under stress, leaving the seemingly prepared homeowner in the same position as others without the extra roofing structure and with less money in their pocket. For more information on best practices for prepping homes and roofs for high wind events like tornado, contact Schulte Roofing with over 100 years of combined roofing experience. It is important to use a competent bryan roofing companies contractor that will install hurricane clips in the right structural locations in a home in order to provide the maximum amount of wind resistance.
