Small business owners expressed their frustration with many of thegovernment's limitations in a small roundtable discussion Friday inGreenwich. Hosted by Len Tannenbaum , chief executive officer of Fifth Street Finance, at his sprawlinghome, the discussion, attended by business owners and entrepreneursfrom Fairfield and Westchester counties, addressed some of the mostpressing concerns of the small business community, includingunions, manufacturing, regulation, employee education and training, tax incentives and health care. "I think it's a very constructive thing to sit and talk to peoplewho are entrepreneurs," Tom Ryan , co-founder and CEO of ICR in Norwalk, said. "The biggestadvantage you have as an entrepreneur is support from local, stateand federal governments, but at this point, I don't think that'sgoing to happen." Many of the issues raised concerned the problems in both state andfederal governments, from the presence of lobbyists in governmentto health care reform, and how to prevent the needs of smallbusinesses from getting lost in the governmental shuffle. "I personally think the issue is not going to get solved untilsomeone comes in and takes care of the center (in government)," Robert Vincent Sisca , from the law offices of Robert Vincent Sisca & Associates in Greenwich, said. There was a call for greater transparency on the part of thegovernment, and for entrepreneurs to have more information onlegislation that has an impact on small businesses. Out of thediscussion, a collective suggestion arose that there should be amethod of compiling information on upcoming state legislation, summarizing each bill in a concise single page, and alerting thesmall business community about which proposed laws could affectentrepreneurs, giving them a chance to exert their input. "That's transparency," Ryan said. "If there's a way to see whatlaws are being processed in real time, what entrepreneur wouldn'twant to know that?" Tannenbaum, who has formed a bipartisan political action committee,Keeping America Competitive, which is in favor of entrepreneurs, advocated a collective movement in the local business community toachieve this. "Out of this initiative this afternoon came an actionable issue,"Tannenbaum said. "There needs to be a focal point for entrepreneursto go to that's partisan to small business.".
