Rudraksha is a bead, the seeds of the Rudraksha tree, found in plenty in India, Nepal and Indonesia. It is botanically known as the 'Elaeocarpus Ganitrus Roxb', but before it was botanically named and researches started to find out its properties, Ayurveda had considered Rudraksha as one of the major healing herbs, with no other herb to second it. Rudraksha beads contain large amounts of energy, which gives them the capability to benefit the wearer in many ways. When translated from Sanskrit into English, Rudraksha breaks into two words - Rudra, which is another name for Lord Shiva and Aksha, which means tear. Literally it means the 'The tear of Shiva'. The fruit that is borne from this plant has a seed, which on drying gives us the Rudraksha bead. In old times, you could find beads with faces ranging from 1-108 faces. Nowadays, the number of faces usually found is between 2 & 21. Rudraksha with more than 21 faces are now extinct though a belief exists that you can still find them in the Mansarover valley. The Rudraksha can be capped with gold or silver and worn. The Devi Bhagavatham points out that those who wear Rudraksha bead will attain Brahmajnana or supreme realization of God. All sins will be washed away if one wears the Rudraksha. But if a person wears a Rudraksha and commits sins, then he will have to take countless births to pay for it. One should not involve in gossip or backbiting if one wears the Rudraksha. If one gives food and clothes to a person wearing the Rudraksha, then all sins will be removed and one will attain heaven because of the good deed. The eight mukhi Rudraksha is one of the most sacred beads available, given the fact that it sensitively balances and helps remove all sorts of obstacles in life, be it physical, divine or mental. Blessed by Lord Ganesha, this becomes the strength of the Rudraksha as it helps the wearer lead a tranquil and peaceful life.
