Education, increasing cost of living and the need to keep one’s self busy has led to a big growth in the number of working professionals in the recent times. While working in private and public offices or doing one’s own business is quite common, there is a new trend that is soon picking up pace too. This is none other than ‘working from home.’ The easy affordability of computers and the easy availability of fast internet connections have made working from home a very popular and convenient option for a many people. A house can be used for several things apart from just living. It can be put to different uses such as a coaching center, an office for a self-employed person like a fashion designer or an interior decorator or even for a business-man or business-women, a work place for a freelance journalist or content writer and so on. While working from home has many conveniences, it can easily have many distractions too. Hence, it is essential to set up a proper home office for the people who work for home so that they can work in a professional manner. Before setting up your home office, there are various things you have to take into consideration, for instance, are you alone going to use the office? Or is someone else also going to share it with you? If yes, then how many people will that be? This is the most important thing as it will determine the furniture you are going to require for your home office. Next, will all your work be done over the telephone and computer? Or are you going to invite clients over? This will again define the interiors of your office as having clients coming over means a certain standard will have to be maintained. Another thing to ponder upon will be how much and what kind of storage space are you going to need? Will shelves be enough or would you require cabinets and lockers as well? As far as office equipment are concerned, computers, printers and telephones are some of the basics but are you going to need things like a fax machine, a scanner or a photo-copier etc. as well? Once the elementary needs have been recognized, a systematic plan has to be laid out to go about setting up a perfect home office. There are various places in a house which can be transformed into an office, for example, an extra bedroom or a guest room or even a store room. In fact, various nooks and corners here and there can also be considered for a small office such as the space underneath a staircase or an unused counter in the kitchen or an aloof corner in the living room etc. Unthought-of places like the terrace or the garden or believe it or not, even a cupboard, can be converted into practical home offices. Depending on the number of people working out of your office, you can decide upon the place. Working from home can many times be a challenge and so it is important to make your home office as inviting as possible. Use a color palette of neutral shades as they make a place appear cool and official. A dash of bold colors here are there can be added for vibrancy but keep it to a minimal as too much brightness can interfere with your creativity. You could adorn the walls with paintings, wall hangings or even motivational messages – whatever you like. Ensure that there is sufficient light in your office as dim light can harm your eyes. Also a poorly lit place looks dull and dreary and this will adversely affect your productivity. Hence, natural light pouring in through the windows is important too. Next, a desk and a comfortable chair are needed. Depending on the number of people, the quantity of both can be decided. Sufficient storage space in the form of shelves, drawers, cabinets, lockers and even floating racks should also be provided for. Subject to your needs, office equipment should be placed around systematically. An office is supposed to be a place where you are at your creative best. It should be an undisturbed corner where you can work in peace and thus maximize your productivity. To bring about calmness and yet alertness into your working space try aromatherapy fragrance products like reed diffusers, oil burners, most demanding scented candles or even potpourri. Fragrance has the ability to sharpen our senses and stimulate our intellect, using such products is, therefore, a good idea. There you see! Setting up a dream home office is not that difficult at all. Just decide on a plan, follow a structure approachand you surely wouldn’t be disappointed!!
