When Donald Rynne spent time in the Middle East as a U.S. military pilot duringWorld War II, he formed ties that would help start his career inthe energy industry. Years later, Rynne, a Greenwich resident and entrepreneur, has beendeveloping a technology, Strataclear, that can reduce carbondioxide emissions from cars and hot water heating systems. Rynne,88, is seeking a patent and further investment for the system, which has already been fitted as a test prototype in vehicles. When fossil fuels are burned, Strataclear acts as a filter andcatches carbon dioxide in a series of replaceable cartridges. In vehicles, the Strataclear system replaces the muffler andresonator, absorbing carbon dioxide and purifying the exhaust afterit has passed through the catalytic converter. According to Rynne, this process eliminates at least 25 percent of carbon dioxideemissions. In house hot water heating systems, the reduction could be as muchas 50 percent, as Rynne found when he tested the system in his ownhouse. "We found that your home produces 50 percent more carbon dioxidethan cars and trucks," Rynne said. "So we were elated to find thatthe technology reduced carbon dioxide in my house by 50 percent. And, it not only reduces carbon dioxide, but it also reduces yourwater bill by 37 percent." Strataclear has been under development since 2007, when Rynne firstencountered the genesis of the technology on a trip to Tokyo. Hestarted Greenwich-based Ryncosmos to support the product and teamedwith Auburn University to test and refine Strataclear. "They're kind of the MIT of the automotive industry," Rynne said."Auburn was so impressed by our technology, they wanted to partnerwith us and have further refinements developed on their campus." Strataclear is undergoing improvements, and the automotive industrywill have to consider several factors when evaluating the product, such as its effect on the performance of the car, whether it wouldchange warranty considerations for the manufacturer or maintenanceconsiderations for the consumer, said Maryann Keller , principal of auto industry consultant Maryann Keller & Associates LLC, in Greenwich and Scottsdale, Ariz. "The auto industry has its unique challenges and just becausesomeone has a technology that's demonstrated to work doesn't meanthat it will be found in a car in two or three years," she said."But, they're likely to get more attention from the auto companiesthan they would have two decades ago, or even a decade ago.".
