While Maldives is primarily a beach destination, there is more to it than white sands, blue waters and sunny skies. The country also has quite a few notable historical and cultural attractions. Since Maldives consists of over a thousand islands, it is quite lucky that most of these attractions can be found in one place; Male, the nation's capital. The capital city may lack good beaches but it does have a few interesting tourist spots. However, of all the sights in Male', few are as well-known as the Hukuru Miskiiy. The Hukuru Miskiiy, also known as the Grand Friday Mosque, is the biggest and oldest mosque in Maldives. Known for its grand and intricate architecture, it is a 'must visit' when in the city. It was constructed by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar in 1658 on the site of a much older mosque. The historical complex consists of the mosque, a minaret, a cemetery and a sundial. The building is made entirely out of coral stone and the inside walls are covered with fine Arab etchings; this includes geometric designs and calligraphy. The adjoining cemetery contains the graves of many notable citizens including former sultans and war heroes. Also at rest here are two master carpenters who crafted the woodwork used in the mosque's construction. The Hukuru Miskiiy has remained more or less unchanged over time, although constant renovations have ensured that the structure is still in very good shape. Non-Muslims who want to go inside typically have to obtain permission from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs beforehand, although it is sometimes possible to get permission at the mosque itself. It is advisable to dress well as those deemed underdressed will not be allowed inside. Tourism is a major contributor to Maldives' economy and the local tourist industry is top notch.
