Also known as the Royal Temple of Mengwi, this well known complex dates back to 1634. Constructed during the Mengwi dynasty, Mengwi Pura Taman Ayun translates to "Garden Temple in the Water" for good reason; surrounded by water the site can be found on an island near Mengwi Village and is home to a picturesque garden area. Approximately 8 kms from Ubud, this well known temple is set amidst the peace and tranquillity of a quaint park featuring ponds and trees that add to the site's charm. Designed and constructed as a symbolic representation of Mount Meru which is considered the home of the gods, Mengwi Pura Taman Ayun has a meru with eleven-tiers and is bordered by canals. The only way to enter the site is by way of a bridge which takes you up to an ornate gate leading to the temple's outer courtyard. While exploring the site you can walk along a footpath that will soon take you to a park where you will find a fountain with nine water jets, meant to symbolize the nine main gods that are revered in Balinese Hinduism. There is a large fishpond that surrounds the temple which adds to its charm, while not to be missed is a visit to the 'jaba jero' courtyard where you will find several shrines and where certain religious ceremonies are held as well.
