The first official contracted day of work for Kent Kultgen,Helena s incoming school superintendent, is July 2, but he isspending a couple days this week getting acclimated. Kultgen moved from Stevensville to Helena on Saturday with hisfamily. The boxes are being unpacked. His son is registered forclasses this fall at Helena High School.
And Kultgen is anxious toget to work. The first step, he said Tuesday, is getting to know the district the staff, the buildings and everything in between. In April,school trustees authorized paying Kultgen $400 a day for 10 workdays so he could do just that. He toured the district s 18 facilities with John Carter, directorof support services, and Terry Beaver, veteran school board member.Kultgen learned about the schools that lack classroom space,schools that have ample playground and green space and schools thathave cosmetic needs, like new carpet.
Kultgen stood inside Smith Elementary Tuesday, noting torn carpetpatched with tape. He said taking the time to get to know thehistory of the buildings and the current conditions will help himget a better start in the new job. Carter said one common denominator among the buildings isair-handling systems, which are often old and not up to code. Going over capital improvements will help me make betterdecisions later on, Kultgen said. When July hits, it will behard to dedicate a whole day to this.
Along with the buildings, Kultgen says he wants to get to know theneighborhoods surrounding the schools. It s not the building that makes education it s who is init, he said. One topic on the forefront of Tuesday s tour was overcrowding inthe North Valley. There are 324 elementary students who should be attending schoolsin the Helena Valley who are bused, some for an hour or more, toother schools that have classroom space.
Jim Darcy Principal Brian Cummings notes there is nothingeducational about being on a bus two hours a day. He says phonecalls to families about having children bused into town away fromtheir neighborhood schools are difficult to make. Administrators and others, including Kultgen and Beaver, are quickto say the long-term solution will come out of the educationalplanning currently under way, a process being led by MosaicArchitecture. The $250,000 two-year process will define howeducation should be delivered in Helena as it relates totechnology, classroom configurations and buildings. A likely resultof the planning process could involve asking voters to approve ahefty bond measure to make changes and improvements.
